October 16, 2026: Street Fighter arrived in Indian cinemas on Friday, bringing Capcom’s fighting-game franchise back to live action. For Indian audiences, a major draw is Vidyut Jammwal, who makes his Hollywood debut as Dhalsim, the franchise’s Indian yogi and martial artist. The film is releasing across India in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

Directed by Kitao Sakurai, the adaptation combines a martial-arts tournament with a fractured friendship and a dangerous conspiracy. Its theatrical launch places Jammwal alongside an international ensemble led by Andrew Koji, Noah Centineo and Callina Liang.

Vidyut Jammwal brings an Indian connection to the action

Jammwal’s casting gives the release a connection to Indian action cinema beyond its dubbed versions. Speaking to Bombay Times before the opening, the actor described Dhalsim as a character whose discipline and outlook closely reflect his own.

He also discussed the project as an opportunity to represent India and showcase Kalaripayattu, the martial art associated with his training. Although Dhalsim has a distinctive appearance, Jammwal revealed that the filmmakers used prosthetics rather than having him shave his head for the role.

That combination of a familiar Indian performer and a recognisable gaming character gives audiences a specific reason to watch how the adaptation handles Dhalsim.

What is Street Fighter about?

The story follows estranged fighters Ryu and Ken Masters, played by Andrew Koji and Noah Centineo. Chun-Li, portrayed by Callina Liang, recruits them for the World Warrior Tournament.

However, the competition conceals a threat beyond its individual fights. Ryu and Ken must confront dangerous opponents while dealing with the unresolved conflict between them. The premise puts their damaged relationship at the centre of the tournament spectacle.

Paramount’s promotional material emphasises the franchise’s signature combat moves and familiar characters, positioning the film around the challenge of translating arcade action into a cinematic experience.

Release details for Indian viewers

BookMyShow lists Street Fighter with a runtime of one hour and 59 minutes and a UA16+ classification. Its cast listing includes Jammwal, Koji, Centineo, Liang and Jason Momoa. Language and screening-format availability depend on the cinema and location.

The release brings together two clear attractions: familiar video-game fighters returning to the screen and an Indian action star entering a major Hollywood adaptation. Whether that combination translates into sustained ticket sales will become clearer after its opening weekend.
